Mourinho speaks on who has the best chance to win the Euros

As the highly anticipated UEFA European Championship gears up for kick-off in Germany later this month, renowned football manager Jose Mourinho has weighed in on the tournament’s favorites.

Jose Mourinho, known for his strategic acumen and outspoken views, has highlighted England, Portugal, France, and Spain as the frontrunners for Euro 2024.

In an interview with GOAL, Mourinho expressed confidence in England’s chances of securing their first major international trophy since the 1966 World Cup. The Three Lions, who are among the bookmakers’ favorites, have a strong squad that Mourinho believes justifies their high expectations.

“England’s tag as favorites is justified. They have a deep squad and the quality to challenge for the trophy,” Mourinho stated.

Turning his attention to his homeland, Jose Mourinho was particularly optimistic about Portugal’s prospects. He highlighted the depth and quality of the current Portuguese squad, suggesting it may be the best the nation has ever produced.

“I don’t want to be disrespectful about previous generations that we had, but in terms of squad depth and quality, we are probably now the best we have ever been, and Portugal can go on to win it,” Mourinho said.

“It’s about having confidence, self-belief that they can beat anyone. I don’t want to say Portugal are the best team, but Spain, France, England, Germany are not better.”

Mourinho also praised the squad depth of Portugal, noting the luxury of having multiple top-tier players for each position.

“The best problem for a coach is having to choose who to play because there are two great right-backs, two great left-backs, two great positional midfielders – and I say two only because there is a 23-man squad but there are more,” he explained.

Despite his optimism for Portugal, Mourinho acknowledged the consistent performances of France and Germany in major tournaments, including them among his top four favorites. “France and Germany always do well, Portugal and England are better than ever. These four teams.”

The former AS Roma boss expressed uncertainty about Spain but still recognized their high-quality football and talented roster.

“I’m not certain about Spain but the football they play and the players they have are of the highest quality,” he said.

He also mentioned that a title defense by Italy or a strong showing from Belgium would be surprising.

Notably, Mourinho did not mention Germany’s chances explicitly, despite the tournament being hosted on German soil.
