Balwinder Sahni’s purchase of a license plate number for an estimated $9 million (N2,837,250,000) may be deemed otherworldly extravagant but the Dubai-based property developer insists he’s a “simple man”.

At a government auction earlier this month, Sahni bid for the licence plate bearing the number ‘5’, CNN Money reports.

The single-digit plate, he bought, are for two of his six Rolls Royce cars. Sahni’s first acquired of an equally expensive licence plate with a winning bid of $6.7 million (N2,112,175,000) at a similar government auction in 2015.

Despite seemingly incredibly outrageous to dole out such a sum on a license plate, Sanni’s purchase is a far cry from the $14 million (N4,413,500,000) record set in 2008 by an Abu Dhabi businessman.

“It’s hard, people giving comments without knowing the type of person I am,” said Sahni, who revealed that people often come up to him to say he wasted money.

“I believe in giving back. This city has given me a lot,” said Sanni.

The property developer views the purchase as his way giving back to society.
