Mikel Arteta is creating problems for Arsenal — Gary Neville warns
Having competition for the goalkeeper position will cause problems at Arsenal, former Manchester United player, Gary Neville has raised the red flag to warn Mikel Arteta over the decision to have competition for the position.
This is in response to the move for former Brentford goalkeeper, David Raya to the Emirates as a backup and potential replacement for Arsenal’s no. 1, Aaron Ramsdale.
According to Gary Neville, this decision will bring about problems that Mikel Arteta is not ready for among his players.
Bringing the situation in comparison to his own experience of the game, Neville asserts that he has ‘never seen it work’ when a club has had 2 top-quality goalies behind the sticks.
The move for the David Raya came about after the Gunners allowed second choice goalkeeper, Matt Turner to leave for Nottingham Forest in the current summer window.
However, debates were raised when Arsenal’s decision was to sign Brentford’s number one instead of a cover for Aaron Ramsdale.
Speaking on the daring move, Gary Neville said on Sky Sports,
“Yes. I’ve said this before, I’m not a fan of competition for goalkeepers. I think you need a clear number one and then a clear number two, that’s my view.
‘The problem is you have a situation where every time a goalkeeper makes a mistake, you then end up asking will he then play the next guy the next week.
“Once you do that once, you’ve undermined the situation and created what I think is sometimes a very difficult situation for everybody in the team.
“So I’m interested to see what Mikel Arteta does with it and how he manages it, because I’ve never seen it work really well before.”
