Microsoft rolls out first major Windows 11 update of 2024

Microsoft has announced the initial rollout of the first significant Windows 11 update of the year, internally code-named “Moment 5.”

This latest update introduces a host of new features and improvements but should not be confused with the larger annual update planned for later this year. Today’s update will be delivered like a routine security patch, offering enhancements to the Copilot AI assistant, better integrations with Android phones, tweaks to Widgets, and more.

Key Highlights of the update

Some of the notable additions and improvements in this update include:

  • Copilot Enhancements: New OS skills like toggling battery saver, displaying device information, and accessing storage. Accessibility skills now include launching live captions, narrator, screen magnifier, voice access, text size, contrast themes, and voice input. Copilot can also display Wi-Fi network details, IP address, available storage, and empty the recycle bin.
  • Photos App: Introduction of a generative eraser to remove unwanted objects.
  • Clipchamp Video Editor: Preview of silence removal.
  • Voice Commands: New voice shortcuts, custom command creation, and multi-display support.
  • Snap Suggestions: Personalized layout suggestions to help organize open apps based on usage.
  • Widgets: Ability to create a focused Widget board and organize Widgets into categories for work or play.
  • Windows Ink: Expanded support in apps like Photos, Paint, WhatsApp, and Messenger.
  • Windows Share Page: Enhanced options now include WhatsApp, Snapchat, and Instagram, with Facebook Messenger coming soon.
  • Android Integration: Access recent photos from Android phones on your PC and use the phone as a webcam for all video conferencing apps.
  • Copilot Plugins: New plugins for OpenTable, Shopify, and Kayak to assist with shopping, dinner reservations, and more.

Gradual Rollout and Availability

Not all features will be available immediately. Microsoft will gradually roll out some features via app updates in the Microsoft Store and others through Windows Update using its Control Feature rollout technology. This ensures a quality experience for everyone.

Users running Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 can get the update today by selecting the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option under Windows Update. Otherwise, the update will be included in a routine security update release later in April. Most new features will be enabled by default in the March 2024 optional non-security preview.
