Enugu assembly forms committee to regulate masquerade activities
The Enugu State House of Assembly has taken decisive action following the abuse of a female nurse by masquerades in Ihe-Owerre, Nsukka Local Government Area.
An ad-hoc committee has been established to devise measures to regulate masquerade activities in the state.
Initiated by Malachy Onyechi of Nsukka West Constituency, the motion addresses human rights abuses, threats to life, and property destruction perpetrated by masquerades.
Onyechi highlighted the alarming rate of incidents, emphasizing the recent assault on Ms. Blessing Ogbonna, a nurse who was viciously attacked and hospitalized.
The motion aims to standardize masquerade practices, ensuring cultural exhibitions, entertainment, or commercial activities adhere to guidelines that prevent abuse.
Onyechi clarified that the intent is not to target individuals or groups but to promote harmony and safety.
Road blockades by masquerades, hindering essential services like nursing, were also condemned. Mr. Pius Ezugwu of Nsukka East Constituency voiced support, citing near-conflicts in his constituency over masquerade-related issues.
