Manchester United to break bank for Atletico Madrid star

Amidst a challenging season marked by struggles on multiple fronts, Manchester United is reportedly intensifying efforts to secure Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann.

The Red Devils, grappling with their worst season start in over six decades under Erik ten Hag’s management, are seeking to bolster their attacking force by luring the Frenchman to Old Trafford.

Recent events have seen United’s European aspirations take a hit following a 4-3 defeat to FC Copenhagen in the Champions League, compounding their woes after an unsteady domestic campaign. Marcus Rashford’s dip in form compared to his prolific performance last season, alongside Rasmus Hojlund’s goal drought in his Premier League outings, has added strain to United’s forward line.

Troubles within the squad have escalated, with Jadon Sancho reportedly sidelined from first-team action following a public fallout with manager Erik ten Hag.

In response to these challenges, United has turned its attention to Griezmann, with reports from Spanish outlet El Nacional indicating significant interest from Old Trafford. It’s been revealed that United’s top brass has already initiated talks with Griezmann’s representatives in Spain regarding a potential move to Manchester.

To entice the Atletico Madrid star, Manchester United is purportedly ready to significantly inflate Griezmann’s salary, reportedly tripling his earnings at Atletico. This lucrative offer could see Griezmann pocketing an annual sum of €21 million (£18.4m), potentially making him one of the highest earners in the Premier League at approximately £350,000 per week.

Importantly, Griezmann’s accessibility in the transfer market is highlighted, with a relatively modest release clause of €25 million at Atletico Madrid’s Civitas Metropolitan Stadium, making the French international an appealing prospect despite his extensive experience.

Antoine Griezmann has long been on Manchester United’s radar, and had even turned down a move to Old Trafford in the 2019/20 season for a move to Barcelona.
