Football takes a tragic turn in Abeokuta of Ogun State as a 43-year-old man reportedly died after VAR call ruled out Nigeria’s second goal that was scored by Victor Osimhen at the 2023 AFCON tournament.

The 43-year-old, identified as Mikail Osundiji, father of 2 went into shock and subsequently succumbed while watching the match at a public football viewing center in the Olomoore area of Abeokuta.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the unfortunate incident occurred when the referee annulled Nigeria’s second goal against South Africa, scored by Victor Osimhen.

According to relatives, Osundiji displayed no prior signs of illness before his sudden demise.

Mrs. Adetunji Nofisat, the elder sister of the deceased, confirmed the heartbreaking event to DailyTrust. She recounted that Osundiji audibly exhaled heavily upon the cancellation of Nigeria’s goal, then lowered his head and collapsed to the ground at the football viewing center.

Prompt assistance was rendered, and Osundiji was swiftly transported to a nearby private hospital in Olomoore. However, the attending doctor pronounced him deceased upon arrival.

Nofisat further disclosed that Osundiji’s remains were laid to rest on Thursday afternoon in accordance with Islamic rites.

She explained that transporting his corpse to his hometown of Okuku in Osun State was not feasible due to the presence of his surviving family members, including his parents and two children aged 12 and 7.
