Man charged over attempt to defraud victim

The EFCC, Benin Zonal Command arraigned Raphael Otobo on a 3-count charge of intent to defraud Kenneth Asuma Osaghe, before Justice (Professor) C. A. Obiozor of the Federal High Court sitting in Benin City, Edo State, TopNaija reports.

Raphael Otobo is said to have made arrangements to defraud Kenneth Asuma Osaghe of the sum of One Million Naira under false pretenses of helping him secure a Canadian visa.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge laid against him with the prosecution counsel, I.K. Agwai requesting the court set up a trial date while the defendant is remanded to a Correctional Facility.

However, the defendant’s counsel, Emmanuel Izegaegbe appealed for bail, which Court Justice Obiozor granted in the sum of One Million Naira with one surety in like sum as the case was considered bail-able.

The count for which he is to stand in court for reads that:

“that you, Raphael Otobo sometime in July 2018 at Benin, Edo State within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court with intent to defraud, did induced one Kenneth Asuma Osaghe to pay the sum of N420,000 into account number 2064628954 domiciled at UBA under the false pretense that the money was for Canadian Visa, a representation you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1(1)(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act,2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”

The case so far is set for a trial date of 14th June, 2022 for its hearing.
