Liverpool hold genuine interests in Darwin Nunez but won’t break bank to sign him
Benfica star forward, Darwin Nunez shone greatly against Liverpool when both sides met in the Champions League’s knockout stages. He scored twice in both legs, and since then he has continually been linked with the Merseyside club.
But reports coming out suggest the links are true to the facts, although a move for the striker is subject to Benfica, as the Reds are said to not be willing to break the bank to get the lethal striker at all costs.
Rivals, Manchester United are also another club keen on the Uruguayan along with other clubs in Europe this summer.
The 22-year-old, widely expected to leave Benfica in the transfer window, will spark a bidding war between top clubs for his signature.
He is understood to be valued by the club at around £68m and will be leaning towards teams playing Champions League football.
Nunez was one of Europe’s breakout stars this season, scoring an astonishing 34 goals in 40 appearances.
Back in April, Liverpool’s manager had lots of praises for the forward, joking in his press conference:
“Extremely good looking boy, huh?”
“And a decent player as well,” he added. “Really good, really good. I knew before, of course, but he played pretty much in front of me with his tough battles with Ibrahima Konate. He was physically strong, quick, was calm around his finish. Good, really good. I always say in these situations if he is healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him.”
Aside Liverpool and Manchester United, Newcastle United are believed to also have interests in the player, although they do share a disadvantage with the Red devils considering their inactivity in European Competitions next season.
