The General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency, Gbolahan Oki, on Sunday, announced this during the pulling down of dilapidated buildings situated at 17b, Odo Osun Street, Off Glover Street; and 20, Omididun Street, both on the Lagos Island.

According to a statement from the Assitance Director /Public Affairs, LASBCA, Gbadeyan Bello, tagged ‘Building collapse: LABSCA, LASPPPA intensify preparations ahead of rains… Demolish more distressed buildings on Lagos Island, others’ stated.

Oki declared that the pulling down exercise was done on Sunday due to traffic congestion and for ease of moving the demolition equipment by the agency officials.

He recollected that inhabitants of the buildings had been served several notices since 2019, with a reminder notice sent to them two weeks ago to evacuate the buildings so as not to keep on endangering their lives and those of their neighbours.

Bello said, “We must begin to be very civil in our approach to issues, especially when it borders on human lives, by not waiting until the worst happens.

“I find it very hard to believe that some people could still be pleading on behalf of occupants of these distressed buildings for more time from the government.”

He indicated the hope that Lagosians would soon begin to follow the proper process of demolishing dilapidated buildings on their own without waiting for government to use taxpayer fund on deploying equipment and human resources for the pulling down of buildings.

The GM, Lagos State Building Control Agency, urged Lagosians to continue to build in a safe way and prioritise their individual and also collective safety, in doing so, it prevents the collapse of frequent building.

Oki further expressed that the demolition exercise would continue across different parts of the state.
