Stop tarnishing Nigeria’s image abroad, you gain nothing - Presidency

Presidential spokesman Garba Shehu has reassured Nigerians that the June 12, 1993, election saga will not be repeated.

The statement was made in response to recent allegations of irregularities during the February 25 presidential election.

According to Shehu, President Muhammadu Buhari has urged candidates and political parties not satisfied with the outcome of the election to approach the court.

He stated that the presidential election will not be annulled, and that anyone with grievances should follow due process to challenge the results.

In a statement titled “At the 5th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries, LDCs,” Shehu revealed that President Buhari had drummed up support for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidency during his recent trip.

The statement also addressed allegations of attempts to poison public opinion against national institutions, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Shehu stressed that these were “vile and unsubstantiated allegations” aimed at recreating the worst election crisis in Nigeria’s history. He emphasized that Nigerians should focus on supporting the country’s institutions and democratic processes, rather than spreading baseless claims.

The February 25 presidential election saw APC presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerge victorious, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) both claiming irregularities in the election process.

The two candidates are currently in court to challenge the election outcome.
