"It’s quite clear" -- Maresca on Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea’s pre-season preparations have been overshadowed by a brewing controversy involving midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

The Argentine player found himself in hot water after posting a video of himself and his Argentina teammates singing a derogatory song about the French national team following their Copa America triumph. This incident not only angered his club colleague Wesley Fofana but also sparked a wave of backlash on social media.

The tension between Enzo Fernandez and Fofana escalated when Fofana publicly called out the midfielder before reportedly unfollowing him on Instagram. Fernandez’s return to River Plate to celebrate his national team’s success only added fuel to the fire.

In response to the growing controversy, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca and club captain Reece James have addressed the issue, attempting to quell the unrest within the squad. Maresca emphasized that both the player and the club have issued apologies.

“I think it’s quite easy in terms of the player did a statement apologising, the club did the same. I don’t think there’s something to add in terms of this situation, it’s already clear and clarified,” Maresca stated.

When questioned about potential problems with Fernandez’s return to the squad, Maresca expressed confidence in the player’s character. “I don’t think so, to be honest. In the end, they are all human beings. I don’t think there is any bad intention from any one of them,” he added. “I spoke with Enzo, I spoke with all of them. The player already did a statement apologising, so it’s quite clear.”

Captain Reece James also weighed in, acknowledging the sensitivity of the situation.

“It’s obviously a really difficult situation. I think Enzo acknowledged he did wrong and quickly put his hand up and apologised to the club, the team, and the people offended,” James said. He revealed that he had spoken to Fernandez and emphasized the need for internal resolution. “I hope everyone will be on the same page and can kind of move forward from this situation.”
