INEC unveils date for Edo, Ondo governorship elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday announced September 19, 2020, as the date for the Edo State governorship election.
The electoral body at a press briefing in Abuja also stated that Ondo governorship poll will hold on October 10, 2020.
The leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, had on Tuesday endorsed a former publicity secretary to the party, Banji Okunomo, as the party’s governorship aspirant ahead of the election while the incumbent Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu is expected to bear the flag of the APC.
In Edo State, four governorship aspirants, namely, Kenneth Imasuangbon, Engr. Gideon Ikhine, Ifaluyi Isibor, and Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama are battling for the sole ticket of the main opposition PDP.
A former governorship aspirant of the PDP, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu recently led some of the leaders of the party into the APC as the crisis rocking the ruling party took a different turn. There has been a fierce battle between the party’s National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole and the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki.
There are feelers that Oshiomhole may decide to present Pastor Ize-Iyamu to the party leaders as the APC flagbearer for the 2020 polls.
Ahead of the Edo state delegate congress scheduled for the month of March, the leadership of the party on Tuesday held a marathon meeting to fine-tune arrangements for a hitch-free outing.
The meeting which held in Benin city, the state’s capital at the residence of the state chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, was attended by 10 leaders from each of the senatorial district.
