House Rep. Alex Ikwechegh under fire for Bolt driver clash
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed that Alex Ikwechegh, a House of Representatives member representing Aba North & South Federal Constituency, is currently being interrogated at its Maitama Divisional Headquarters following allegations of assault.
Ikwechegh is accused of slapping a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, during a dispute over a delivery fee.
In a widely circulated video, the lawmaker allegedly struck the driver after Abuwatseya requested payment, asking, “Do you know who you’re talking to?” Ikwechegh also reportedly threatened to make the driver “disappear” without consequences.
The FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed that a preliminary investigation revealed the incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.
According to Adeh, Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwechegh when a disagreement arose over the delivery method, culminating in the alleged assault.
Adeh further criticized Ikwechegh’s attitude during the altercation, noting that he dismissed the authority of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.
After reportedly slapping Abuwatseya, the lawmaker allegedly said, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” signaling a disregard for law enforcement.
In response, FCT Commissioner of Police Tunji Disu has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
The Command emphasized its commitment to a fair inquiry and assured that appropriate legal action would follow upon the investigation’s conclusion.
