Guardiola reacts to Kyle Walker’s cheating scandal
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has affirmed that Kyle Walker will continue to serve as the club’s captain, despite the ongoing personal challenges surrounding the player.
Guardiola, known for his reluctance to delve into the private lives of his squad members, emphasized his support for Walker amidst the controversies.
The defender’s personal life came under public scrutiny when his wife, Annie Kilner, reportedly ejected him from their family residence in Manchester back in December 2023.
This followed confirmation that Walker had fathered another child with Lauryn Goodman, with whom he had a previous relationship leading to the end of his marriage with Annie in 2019.
Despite the tumultuous past, Walker and Annie, who are expecting their fourth child together, reconciled and tied the knot over two years ago.
Walker, who assumed the captaincy of Manchester City last summer after Ilkay Gundogan’s departure, publicly apologized for his infidelity in a recent interview. Critics have argued that given the emotional distractions and controversies surrounding Walker, he may not be fit to retain the captain’s armband.
However, ahead of Manchester City’s Premier League clash against Burnley scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Guardiola stood firm on his decision to keep Walker as the team’s captain. “Absolutely, because it’s a decision for the team, not mine,” asserted the Spanish tactician.
He further declared his unwavering support for Walker and his family, restating his commitment to refraining from discussing players’ personal matters.
