German club FC St. Pauli accuses X of promoting ‘Hate’

German football club FC St. Pauli has drawn a bold line in the sand, announcing its departure from Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter), citing the platform’s alleged role in amplifying hate and threatening democracy.

The club, known for its progressive stance, declared in a statement that Musk’s leadership has turned X into a tool for spreading unchecked racism, conspiracy theories, and far-right propaganda.

“Since taking over Twitter, Musk has converted X into a hate machine,” the statement read, adding that the platform now poses a significant risk to the integrity of public discourse, including upcoming elections in Germany.

The Boys in Brown, who joined the platform in 2013 and amassed 250,000 followers, revealed they had already reduced their activity on X, prioritizing content promoting diversity and inclusion.

St. Pauli’s decision follows a wave of exits by major organizations, including The Guardian, in the wake of Musk’s controversial involvement in the U.S. presidential election and his new role in Donald Trump’s administration.

While the club’s historical content will remain on X, St. Pauli is urging its fans to follow them on BlueSky, where their English account will also relocate. This bold move adds to the growing backlash against X’s shift from a space for dialogue to what critics describe as a “megaphone for authoritarian agendas.”
