From bad to Worse, fans tear into Amrabat after AFCON exit

Manchester United midfielder on loan from Fiorentina, Sofyan Amrabat faced a lot of ridicule from fans as he endured a challenging time during Morocco’s exit from the Africa Cup of Nations, where he was seemingly “sent off twice.”

Amrabat, who joined United in an £8.5 million loan deal on the deadline day, has struggled to meet expectations, starting seven out of 13 available Premier League games.

The 27-year-old’s performances have raised doubts about the possibility of United making his move permanent, with a £21.4 million purchase option in the summer.

Representing Morocco at the AFCON, Amrabat faced further setbacks on Tuesday as the team suffered a surprising 2-0 defeat to South Africa in the last-16 stage.

Despite Morocco being considered the best team on the continent by FIFA World Rankings, the loss marked one of the biggest upsets in AFCON history.

Amrabat’s frustrations boiled over in injury time when he was shown a second yellow card for a challenge on midfielder Teboho Mokoena. As a result, he was sent off, and South Africa capitalized on the free-kick to seal Morocco’s fate.

Expecting a potential reprieve through VAR, Amrabat saw his hopes dashed when the referee, after consulting the pitchside monitor, upgraded the punishment to a straight red card.

Fans quickly took notice of what seemed like a double dismissal for the United midfielder and took to social media to mock the situation.

One fan humorously remarked, “Amrabat getting sent off for a second yellow, then told to come back for a VAR check, then getting a straight red card… to me, that’s absolute cinema.”

Another fan joined in, saying, “Amrabat really got sent off twice!”

The unexpected turn of events in the AFCON prompted one fan to express,

“AFCON, I was not familiar. This is genuinely pure entertainment, anyone can win.”
