Cultists kill vigilante memmber in Rivers

A member of a vigilante group, Uche Orukwo, was tragically killed by individuals believed to be cultists at the Obidanso waterfront in Mile 1, Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

On Saturday, April 7, 2024, a group of individuals from the Diobu Vigilante Group (DVG) joined forces with the police after receiving a tip-off regarding the activities of cult groups. At approximately 9pm, they made their way to the waterfront to take action.

According to a source interviewed by media outlet, The Punch, it was disclosed that upon their arrival, the alleged gang members set up an ambush with the intention of attacking a rival group.

This incident is believed to be part of an ongoing conflict between two factions of a suspected cult group referred to as ‘Deygbam’.

“But when the suspected cultists spotted the security operatives, they opened fire, and a bullet hit the vigilante member named Orukwo, resulting in his death
,” the source said.

The spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the killing of Orukwo, adding that investigation was ongoing to arrest the perpetrators.

“Our men are in the area to ensure that those behind the shooting are apprehended and brought to justice,
” she added.
