Caro White: NAFDAC sends strong warning

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning following the European Union (EU) Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) recall of Caro White Skin Lightening Beauty Lotion.

The product was recalled due to its high concentration of Kojic Acid, exceeding the allowable limit of one per cent as per the Cosmetic Products Regulation.

This alert was published on NAFDAC’s website on May 13, titled ‘Public Alert No. 15/2023 – Alert on the Recall of Ivorian Made Skin Lightening Beauty Lotion.’

The agency highlighted that the excessive Kojic Acid concentration could potentially disrupt endocrine functions.

NAFDAC advised importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution regarding the product.

The agency noted that Caro White is not listed in its database and urged those in possession of the lotion to stop its sale or use and to submit their stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.

Healthcare professionals and consumers are encouraged to report any adverse effects from the product to NAFDAC.

According to Channels Television, an analysis conducted on July 7, 2023, revealed that Caro White Intensive Care Lightening Beauty Cream sold via eBay in the UK contained 422mg/kg (0.042% w/w) clobetasol propionate, a banned substance in cosmetic products, posing a serious chemical risk to consumers.
