A DHL cargo plane for mail and packages missed the runway and broke into half in emergency landing in Costa Rica on Thursday.

The incident has caused the international airport of San Jose to temporarily halt operations.

Costa Rica firefighters chief, Hector Chaveswo said, the two crew members aboard were “in good health.”

Notwithstanding, Guido Vasquez who is a Red Cross worker, said they have been sent to the hospital as a precaution “for a medical check-up.”

The accident happened around 10:30 am (1630 GMT), after the Boeing-757 plane took off from the Juan Santamaria international airport, outside San Jose.

Due to a mechanical failure, it was forced to return 25 minutes later for an emergency landing.

According to Ricardo Hernandez, General Manager of Aeris, the public company which manages the airport, operations are now back to normal in the airport, “as well for the arrivals as for the departures”.
