Nigerian-American author slams Black Panther trailer and Hollywood

The Marvel Cinematic Universe unveiled a trailer for its upcoming movie, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a sequel to the 2018 film that drew on fans an emotional response.

The trailer came out in the Comic Con fan convention as a tribute to the actor, Chadwick Boseman whose death a few years back came as a shock to the world.

But despite the emotional appeal of the trailer and the film in general, Nigerian-American author, Nedi Okorafor picks out a problem with the movie and its 2018 prequel.

It’s a problem in which the author associates with Hollywood and its colonial-like culture as she describe the film taking elements of some African culture for the sake of marvel without acknowledging its ‘roots and foundation’.

Nedi Okorafor slams the Hollywood culture of just take and rewrite as theirs as she points out the pretentious nature of the Black Panther films and Hollywood in general.

The Nigerian-American author who specializes in the works of Science Fiction wrote on social media handle; a post which has now been removed, saying:

“But then again, these films act like all African cultures are there to be mined for Marvel, the roots and foundation don’t matter, just take take take and rewrite to make it theirs. It’s careless and shortsighted. Sounds like…colonization, hmmm.

“Yeah I said it.

“I stayed quiet about this when the first film came out…SO I GAVE IT TIME TO DO WELL (though I don’t see why i had to do that to not be called a hater). I’m not doing it any more….because staying quiet (and being afraid of the heat that comes with conveying the message many don’t want to hear) only allows the practice to go unchecked.”

Her views though aren’t specifically about the films plot but the subject of rewriting history and culture without acknowledging the foundation or structures to which it was borrowed.
