BBC Investigations unearths disturbing scandal on TB Joshua

A comprehensive two-year investigation conducted by the BBC in collaboration with Open Democracy has unearthed deeply troubling allegations of systemic abuse and torture within the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), under the leadership of the late Nigerian televangelist, TB Joshua.

This extensive probe, spanning nearly two decades, has brought to light distressing testimonies from over 25 former church members across various countries, painting a grim picture of the alleged atrocities committed within SCOAN.

The accounts provided by these ex-church members, including five from the UK, paint a chilling pattern of offenses, encompassing rape, forced abortions, and physical violence.

Disturbingly, these accounts extend as recently as 2019, with many victims likening their experiences to being ensnared within a cult-like environment.

Among the victims, Rae, a British national, shared her harrowing story of joining the church at 21, detailing severe sexual assault by TB Joshua himself and enduring extended periods of solitary confinement within the church’s compound in Lagos.

Rae’s account resonates with others, such as Jessica Kaimu from Namibia, who alleges she was raped by TB Joshua at 17 and coerced into multiple abortions.

The investigation has also exposed fraudulent practices within the church, including staged “miracle healings” and manipulation of followers by Joshua.

Several victims reported being subjected to dehumanizing treatment, including being stripped, beaten with electrical cables and horsewhips, and deprived of sleep as part of their ordeal.

BBC journalists encountered resistance and hostility, including being fired upon by church security, while attempting to document their investigation in Lagos.

While SCOAN continues to operate globally under the leadership of TB Joshua’s widow, Evelyn, the church vehemently denies previous allegations against the late televangelist, asserting that none of the claims were ever substantiated.

The UK Foreign Office, though not directly addressing these specific claims, has reiterated its commitment to addressing reports of crimes, including sexual assault, against British nationals abroad.
