The Church of Pentecost, which serves the Ghanaian community in South Africa, was attacked during a live broadcast of a service.
According to local media, armed bandits broke into a Johannesburg branch of the church on Sunday, October 29, and looted members of their belongings.
The Ghana High Commission in South Africa confirmed the robbery and the kidnap of a Ghanaian deacon during the church service.
In a video from the live stream which surfaced online, the robbers seized valuables from church members at gun point, after which they whisked away the deacon. The whereabouts of the church deacon remain unknown.

The criminals grabbed items from church members at gunpoint, then whisked away the deacon, according to a video from the live stream that appeared online. The church deacon’s whereabouts are unclear.
Ghana’s High Commission sent a letter to the Ghanaian community in South Africa on October 30, 2023, stating that it was working with the authorities to facilitate the “speedy and safe release and return of the victim to his family.”
“Kindly note that the South African police is fully focused on the matter and is working hard to ensure the safe return of our compatriot,” it added.
