A Picture I Never Want to See—Gary Neville On Ronaldo
Despite their ideological differences, Gary Neville is one critic of Cristiano Ronaldo who wasn’t happy seeing the former Manchester United star in tears leaving the world cup stage in defeat. To Gary Neville, it was a picture he never really wanted to see.
Gary Neville, a former defender for Manchester United, described seeing his old teammate Cristiano Ronaldo cry when he was eliminated from the World Cup on Saturday as “terrible.”
Gary Neville said it was awful to see Ronaldo, whom he called the greatest player of all time, cry in that way.
Morocco eliminated Portugal from the World Cup on Saturday in Qatar, making Walid Regragui’s team the first African nation to advance to the World Cup semifinals.
To match the men’s all-time appearance record of 196 international games, Ronaldo, 37, started from the bench.
As a result of Youssef En-first-half Nesyri’s goal, the Arab nation advanced to the semi-finals, where they will play the reigning champions France on Wednesday.
One of Ronaldo’s most recent detractors, Gary Neville, was still able to empathize with the former Manchester United player as he walked straight down the tunnel in tears at the end of the game.
“I do want to mention Cristiano Ronaldo because I saw that image of him crying in the tunnel,” Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast.
“That was a horrible image for me. That’s that moment where he knows his dream of winning the World Cup for his country has gone.
“He’s one of the greatest, if not the greatest player of all time. It was horrible to see him like that. He’s had a tough couple of months.”
In 2026, when Mexico, Canada, and the United States of America will host the World Cup, Brazil, The Netherlands, Portugal, and England will hope to return to football’s biggest stage with yet another opportunity to do one better.
Argentina, Morocco, France, and Croatia will compete for the trophy in the remaining days of the tournament in Qatar.
