I'm proud to be Liverpool's new No. 9 -- Darwin Nunez

Roberto Firmino has truly left Liverpool, but the Reds now have a new no. 9 in Darwin Nunez.

Liverpool’s newly assigned No.9, Darwin Nunez, has revealed his pride and inspiration upon taking on the prestigious jersey for the 2023-24 season.

The Uruguayan forward has chosen to inherit the iconic number, which was left vacant following the departure of Roberto Firmino, whose contract expired earlier this summer.

After donning the No.27 shirt during his first season at Anfield after joining last summer, Nunez has now officially made the switch to the legendary No.9. In an interview with Liverpoolfc.com, he expressed his joy and pride in representing such an esteemed number for the club.

“I’m really happy to wear number nine, and I’m very proud too,” Nunez stated. “Honestly, other players who previously represented this number did so remarkably well, and now it’s my turn to wear it. I hope that everything goes well.”

The Uruguayan forward acknowledged the weight of responsibility that comes with wearing the No.9 jersey, given the illustrious players who have previously held that number for Liverpool.

Darwin Nunez expressed his desire to honor the legacy of his predecessors and to represent the number to the best of his abilities.

“I hope I’m able to represent it in the best way, just as the previous players did,” Nunez continued. “I hope to wear it for many years and bring a lot of joy to the club and its fans.”

Nunez’s choice to take on the No.9 jersey reflects his aspirations to make a significant impact on the field and contribute to Liverpool’s continued success.

The No.9 shirt holds a special significance at the club, having been previously worn by legendary figures such as Ian Rush and Fernando Torres.

As Liverpool prepares for the upcoming season, fans will eagerly anticipate witnessing Nunez’s performances while donning the No.9 jersey.

The 23-year-old forward showcased his potential in his debut season at Anfield, and with this new honor bestowed upon him, he aims to make a lasting mark and add to the rich history associated with Liverpool’s No.9.
