Ballon d'Or: Messi refuses to rate Jude Bellingham

English stars continue to get overlooked when it comes to the grand occasions and Lionel Messi is one of those who doesn’t rate a certain English star, Jude Bellingham.

Messi, who stands the record eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, stirred debate when he omitted the Real Madrid midfielder’s name from his predictions for the 2024 Ballon d’Or contenders.

Following his recent triumph, the Inter Miami star named Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., and young Barcelona talent Lamine Yamal as potential future winners, but did not mention the England star.

Bellingham’s Stellar Season

Jude Bellingham, who joined Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund, is a strong contender for the prestigious award. In his debut season, he netted 23 goals in 42 appearances, playing a crucial role in Real Madrid’s Champions League and La Liga victories. As England prepares to face the Netherlands in the Euro 2024 semi-final, a win could further bolster Bellingham’s claim.

Messi’s Predictions and Bellingham’s Response

Messi, speaking after his latest Ballon d’Or win, highlighted the potential of younger players. “Haaland, Mbappe, Vinicius, and many young players can compete for Ballon d’Or in the next years,” he stated, also mentioning Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal as a future star.

Bellingham, however, remains unfazed by the omission. In a May interview, he expressed his indifference towards individual accolades, emphasizing the contributions of his teammates. “I’m not really too fussed about it,” Bellingham said. “I always thought the Ballon d’Or was for the strikers, the wingers, and the flashy players. No one can entertain the crowd like Vini [Vinicius Jr.].”

Mutual Respect with Vinicius Jr.

Bellingham’s rapport with Vinicius Jr. highlights their strong partnership on and off the pitch. “When he’s at his best, I think he’s the best player in the world,” Bellingham remarked. “If he was to win it, I’d feel just as proud as if I won it, because I know I’ve helped contribute to the success.”

As the Ballon d’Or ceremony on October 28 approaches, the debate over who will claim the coveted prize intensifies. Despite Messi’s snub, Bellingham’s outstanding performances ensure he remains a key contender.
