Manchester United to swap Fernandes in shock transfer move

According to Spanish newspaper Nacional, via Football365, Manchester United have tabled an audacious swap proposal involving their captain. The proposition entails sending Fernandes to Barcelona in exchange for Frenkie de Jong, a player who has long been on United’s radar.

Despite United’s pursuit of De Jong during the 2022 summer transfer window yielding no results, the club’s interest in the Dutch midfielder remains strong. While they ultimately secured the services of Casemiro for £70 million, De Jong remains a top priority for United’s recruitment plans.

Reportedly, Barcelona’s valuation of De Jong at £77.5 million has deterred United from pursuing a straight cash deal. Instead, they are considering leveraging Fernandes as part of the agreement. The proposed deal involves United paying £17 million in addition to Fernandes being included in the transfer to secure De Jong’s services.

Sources suggest that Fernandes is open to the move to Barcelona, even willing to lower his salary to join the Blaugrana. The midfielder’s potential arrival at Barcelona could bolster their squad and provide a significant boost to their midfield options.

De Jong, who previously played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax, is seen as a key target for United. Ten Hag himself has acknowledged the importance of a player like De Jong in implementing his preferred style of play, describing him as a “typical player” for the system he aims to implement at United.
