Szoboszlai gives Liverpool the last laugh as Caicedo truth emerges

Moises Caicedo who? Liverpool left in awe of new gem, Dominik Szoboszlai

The Summer transfer window had the 2023/24 season looking all bleak for Liverpool even before the season had started, despite the signings of Dominik Szobozslai, Alexis Mac Alister and Ryan Gravenberch as the Reds’ midfield reinforcements.

3 of the club’s transfer targets; Jude Bellingham, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia chose other destinations, out rightly rejecting a move to Merseyside, contributing to the narrative that Liverpool no longer to attract the best players.

It was even made much worse when Liverpool decided to put in a few quid for 30-year-old Japan star, Wataru Endo from Stuttgart, a move even the media questioned. Were the club’s scouting team serious? Do they know what they wanted or were they giving up on the season even before it started?

Questions and more questions.

The team needed a hard working midfield system full of energy and the best they could do was go for a 30-year-old.

Aside Alexis Mac Alister who the media, fans and critics alike all agreed was the most experienced of the bunch, no one was sure how the performances of the rest was going to turn out.

However, a flash-forward into the 10th match week of the Premier League season, Dominik Szoboslai has built himself a fandom amongst the Kop faithful, his name chanted and comparisons made to a certain Reds legend.

Wataru Endo though with a mixed performance, has contributed more in terms of goal involvement than Fabinho did in his first games for Liverpool. And for Bayern Munich reject, Ryan Gravenberch, the media has but to wonder how a player as such could lack game time in the Bundesliga.

Liverpool raged when the Moises Caicedo deal fell through and the Ecuadorian chose the path of London as opposed to Merseyside Red. But after Dominik Szobozslai’s recent performances, specifically in Sunday’s tie versus Nottingham Forest at Anfield, a blessing in disguise situation is now ever more glaring for the fans.

Liverpool railroaded their visitors with Dominik Szoboszlai playing a part in the 3-0 victory at home, registering 2 exquisite assists to set up goals for Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah.

106 touches in the game, 75/81 passes [93%] completed, 4 chances created, 3/4 successful dribbles [75%], 3/4 accurate long balls [75%], 13 recoveries and 4/7 ground duels [57%] for the Hungarian midfielder, leaves Liverpool having the last laugh.

They may have been rejected by some of the best midfielders there is, but Liverpool are doing quite nicely having Dominik Szobozslai around ticking all the boxes.
