How I once attempted suicide – Betty Irabor

Nigerian publisher and founder of Genevieve magazine, Betty Irabor has shared hpw she once attempted suicide when she was ‘sick and in pain’.

Irabor, who claimed to have suffered depression, shared her experience on Twitter while speaking against popular criticisms of suicidal attempts.

Don’t label or judge what you do not understand. If you haven’t walked in a man’s or woman’s shoes you cannot make assumptions about what they do or why they do it,” Irabor wrote.

“At the time I attempted suicide, I was sick and in pain. There was a volcano somewhere inside of me that needed to erupt and suicide seemed like an option to avoid the eruption.”

“Don’t trivialize anyone’s pain just because it’s not physical and you cannot see it.”

The 62-year old writer said people who have never experienced conditions that could make them consider suicide shouldn’t be quick to judge victims.

The media entrepreneur is the latest public figure penning her thought on the increasing rate of suicidal cases in the country.

Alariwo of Africa, a Nigerian musician, had described the act as being ‘absolutely wrong’, while the hashtag ‘say no to suicide’ has spurred several conversations on social media.
