300 Armed Thugs Arrested In Enugu State
Over 300 armed political thugs arrested in Enugu State during senatorial election.
In a dramatic turn of events, security agencies in Enugu State have arrested over 300 political thugs in various polling units across the state during the senatorial election. The thugs reportedly came from Kogi, Anambra and Benue states to cause mayhem during the election.
The arrests were made in different locations in Enugu East and Enugu North senatorial zones, with the council chairman of Isi-Uzo LGA, Obiora Obeagu, and his immediate past chairman, Jacob Abonyi, among those arrested.
Sources say that 32 armed thugs were arrested in Isi-Uzo, allegedly deployed by the chairman of the local government to disrupt the election. In Igbo-Eze North council area, 20 armed thugs were arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning, while 140 were apprehended in Nsukka, a university town.
One of the soldiers who led the operations accused the operatives of the Nigeria Police Force of being complicit in various political thuggery in the state. He alleged that 30 political thugs working for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that were arrested in Leje Nsukka during the election were released after being handed over to the police, only to return and destroy election materials.
Meanwhile, political thugs allegedly working for a former governor of the state reportedly chased out all Labour Party agents at Nkanu West LGA headquarters in Agbani, a collation centre for Enugu East senatorial election. Journalists were also harassed and forced to leave the premises.
Despite the violence, the election continued and results are expected to be announced soon.
