Breaking: Zenith bank appoints Dr. Adaora Umeoji as first female GMD

Zenith Bank Plc has appointed Dr. Adaora Umeoji as its new Group Managing Director, effective June 1, 2024.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by Michael Otu, Company Secretary, and filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited on Tuesday.

Dr. Umeoji will succeed Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, the current GMD, whose term ends on May 31. She will be the bank’s first female GMDCEO, upholding its tradition of developing leaders from within.

“Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji is the first female GMDCEO since the inception of the bank, and her appointment is consistent with the bank’s executive transition tradition, succession plan, and strategy of grooming leaders from within,” part of the statement read.

Before her appointment, Dr. Umeoji had been the Deputy Managing Director of Zenith Bank since October 28, 2016, bringing nearly 30 years of banking experience, including 26 years at the bank.

She has degrees from prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School, Columbia Business School, and the University of Jos. She has also completed a variety of management programmes at world-renowned universities.

Dr. Umeoji’s appointment is a significant milestone for Zenith Bank and demonstrates the company’s commitment to gender diversity in leadership positions.

Zenith Bank is one of Nigeria’s leading banks, with a market capitalization greater than N1 trillion. As of Tuesday’s close of trading, its market value was N1.19 trillion, with shares priced at N38.1 per unit.
