“You’re just bitter” — Liverpool fans come after Man United legend
The Carabao Cup win over Chelsea has brought a lot of Liverpool fans out from the shadows (for lack of a better word), and it is a Manchester United legend feeling the brunt of it.
Ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has found himself in the midst of controversy after his comments on the Carabao Cup final sparked backlash from Liverpool fans.
The final, held at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, witnessed Liverpool clinch a dramatic 1-0 victory over Chelsea with a 120th-minute winner from Virgil van Dijk.
Despite key players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Dominik Szoboszlai sidelined due to injuries, Liverpool managed to secure the trophy.
Fielding a team predominantly composed of youngsters, Liverpool’s lineup included Conor Bradley, Harvey Elliott, and several academy players.
However, Ferdinand, speaking on his podcast Vibe with Five, attempted to downplay the significance of Liverpool’s youthful squad by highlighting the average age of Chelsea‘s lineup, which he claimed was older.
“You know their team was older than Chelsea’s. Age doesn’t lie,” Ferdinand remarked during the podcast.
His comments drew criticism from Liverpool supporters, who accused him of bitterness and attempting to diminish Liverpool’s achievement. Social media platforms buzzed with Liverpool fans expressing their displeasure towards Ferdinand’s remarks.
Responding to the backlash, one fan on social media remarked, “When you’re in Klopp’s presence you’re a little fanboy giggling. You’re just bitter.”
Another fan pointed out the apparent double standard, stating,
“Last year [winning the Carabao Cup] was the best thing ever for Casemiro and [Raphael] Varane hahahaha but should kids just do it it’s nothing special.”
A third fan criticized the attempt to undermine Liverpool’s victory, stating,
“Who called Kelleher a kid? They are trying to de-legitimize the win because of a comment from Neville. The issue is experience, not age.”
