"You can remove your name" — Shettima to Kemi Badenoch

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has delivered a fiery response to Kemi Badenoch, the newly elected leader of the UK’s Conservative Party, over her past criticisms of Nigeria.

Speaking at the 10th Annual Migration Dialogue in Abuja, Shettima didn’t mince words. He acknowledged Badenoch’s achievements but expressed disappointment in her previous remarks accusing Nigerian politicians of misusing public funds.

“She is entitled to her opinions; she even has the right to remove the Kemi from her name,” Shettima declared, before launching into a spirited defense of Nigeria.

“The greatest black nation on earth is the nation called Nigeria. By 2050, we will surpass the United States and become the third most populous nation on earth.”

His comments come after failed attempts by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) to engage with Kemi Badenoch following her election. NIDCOM Chair Abike Dabiri-Erewa confirmed they received no response from Badenoch’s office, fueling concerns about her connection to her roots.

Shettima’s bold statement not only rebukes Badenoch’s criticisms but also underscores Nigeria’s growing influence and population trajectory on the global stage.
