“You are one to talk” — Jamie Carragher blasts Pep Guardiola
An exchange of words between Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has sparked heated debate, as Guardiola passionately defended his team following their recent back-to-back draws against Liverpool and Tottenham in the Premier League.
During a press conference addressing City’s performance, Guardiola took aim at Sky Sports punditry, including Carragher, who questioned City’s prospects of securing a record fourth successive Premier League title.
Expressing his disagreement with Carragher’s analysis, Guardiola referenced the pundit’s lack of a league title win in his career, highlighting,
“Jamie Carragher didn’t win one (league title). Micah Richards didn’t win four Premier Leagues in a row. Never, ever.”
In response, Carragher took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to counter Guardiola’s remarks, drawing attention to the numerous charges (115 in total) issued against Manchester City by the Premier League over time. Carragher also clarified that he had actually praised Guardiola’s team after their recent match against Spurs.
“I think I’d have probably won one if Liverpool were owned by a nation-state, and pushed the rules so far that the PL charged us 115 times!! I was actually praising Pep’s team after the game on Sunday.”
Ahead of City’s upcoming fixture against Aston Villa, Guardiola reiterated his confidence in his team’s ability to secure the Premier League title once more. He expressed optimism about City’s performance against Liverpool and Tottenham, indicating his willingness to sign for his team to maintain that level throughout the season.
“I have a feeling that if we maintain that level, we’ll win the Premier League. We will win it again,” the former Barcelona manager stated confidently.
Emphasizing his team’s determination and effort, Guardiola dismissed accusations of complacency, citing the players’ commitment and resilience on the field.
He referenced the challenges of winning multiple league titles, mentioning former Manchester United player Gary Neville’s tenure without achieving four consecutive Premier League victories.
“He knows how difficult it is otherwise Gary Neville would’ve won four Premier Leagues in the best period of Manchester United. But he didn’t do it. I see my team, how they fight, how they press, how they continue until the end and how upset they are after we concede.”
