Yoruba group urges Tinubu to reinstate 1963 constitution

The Yoruba Peoples Forum (YPF) has called on President Bola Tinubu to take decisive steps toward reinstating Nigeria’s 1963 Republican Constitution, arguing that this is essential to reposition the country for progress.

In a statement released on Monday in Lagos, YPF leaders, Chairman Banji Ayiloge and General Secretary Dipo Akinsiku, emphasized that many Nigerians are disillusioned with the 1999 Constitution and seek a return to the regional governance structure originally agreed upon by the nation’s founding fathers.

The group supports the need for meaningful reforms under the current administration, insisting that these must include the adoption of the 1963 Constitution, which was discarded by the military.

YPF highlighted that Sir Ahmadu Bello, along with leaders like Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, championed autonomous regional governments, a system they believe will bring economic and political progress.

The YPF urged President Tinubu to initiate the process of constitutional reform based on the 1963 model, advocating for a referendum to secure the people’s mandate.

They stressed that without such a change, Nigeria would remain stagnant under the current federal system, which they described as overbearing and ineffective.

The group called on all ethnic groups to focus on finding solutions that will benefit the nation as a whole, rather than clinging to the military-imposed 1999 Constitution. YPF expressed confidence that Nigerians would support President Tinubu if he leads the country in this direction, which they believe is the surest path to national development and progress.
