World Economic Forum: President Tinubu meets Bill Gates to discuss tech
President Bola Tinubu engaged in discussions with Microsoft founder and philanthropist, Bill Gates, during a sideline meeting at the World Economic Forum Special Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The conversation revolved around the significance of technology in the modern world.
Tinubu emphasized his administration’s commitment to technology geared towards enhancing transparency, accountability, and public-sector efficiency in Nigeria. He underscored technology’s role in combating corruption and financial malpractice within the government.
Highlighting his dedication to implementing reliable technology for a national consumer credit system and other vital government initiatives, President Tinubu acknowledged the challenges associated with system improvement but stressed its long-term benefits.
“Technology is the enemy of fraud, corruption, and irregularity. We have been working hard on improving technology… Corruption, self-interest, and fraudulent activity will always be an enemy, but when you bend that curve, you will receive the benefit. The nation will receive the benefit,” remarked President Tinubu.
Drawing from his experience as the former governor of Lagos State, Tinubu recounted successful technological interventions that significantly increased the state’s revenue base. He emphasized the necessity of investing in technology to achieve efficiency and diligence.
In response, Bill Gates shared insights on a unified technological platform for data integration and emphasized the importance of data harmonization for effective planning, security, and tax efficiency.
“We are working with Mr. Wale Edun, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, on digitisation… Before you came into office, there were a few things attempted in identity management. But they have been very scattered. There have been multiple identification systems,” Gates explained.
The meeting between President Tinubu and Bill Gates underscores the critical role of technology in advancing governance, economic development, and transparency in Nigeria.
