World Cup: South Africa forced to spend night in Port Harcourt

The Bafana Bafana squad of South Africa faced an unexpected delay on their journey to Uyo for their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria. The team and officials were unable to reach their destination on Wednesday night, resulting in an overnight stay in Port Harcourt.

The South African contingent arrived in Port Harcourt from Johannesburg late Wednesday. However, their planned onward flight to Uyo was thwarted as the airport had closed by the time they were scheduled to depart.

Hugo Broos’ side is now set to complete their trip to Uyo on Thursday morning. Once they arrive, the team will get an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium later in the evening.

Despite the travel hiccup, Bafana Bafana’s preparations continue as they gear up for the much-anticipated encounter against the Super Eagles. The match is scheduled to take place at 8pm on Friday.

Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how this delay might impact the readiness of South Africa for the critical qualifier, which is a significant step on the road to the 2026 World Cup.
