The news article reports that during the 2023 elections in Nigeria, the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) malfunctioned, causing delays and preventing Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State from casting his vote.

The governor had arrived at his unit 7 ward 8 polling unit with his wife to cast their votes, but the malfunctioning BVAS machine caused a delay.

The officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) tried to explain to the governor that the BVAS malfunction was a general problem across the country.

However, despite the efforts made by INEC officials, the governor was unable to cast his vote and had to retreat to his private family home.

The governor’s past rift with the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his group G-5 abstaining from the campaign of Atiku Abubakar, the party’s Presidential Candidate. Atiku had defeated Wike to clinch the ticket and also overlooked him and settled for Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State as his running mate.

This incident highlights the importance of technology in the electoral process and the need for adequate preparation to ensure the smooth running of the electoral process.
