A fire Dr. A. Ajiboye of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), started seemed to have reached his wife at home.

Ajiboye, a sub-dean of the faculty, allegedly slapped student union (SUG) president Lukman Sobowale on Monday.

Angry students wanted to “scatter the school” but it was Sobowale who called for calm while Ajiboye reportedly disappeared.

Twenty-four hours after the alleged assault, UNILORIN SUG demanded Ajiboye be fired to show that well-mannered students who choose the path of peace in the face of public humiliation would not suffer for nothing.

Sources from the highly-rated federal university told Press men, Wednesday night, the lecturer’s wife “has since been making calls to the powers that be to beg on behalf of her husband”.

“From what I can confirm,” said a source, “she even cried on the phone why making the frantic calls”.

We have not been able to reach Mrs Ajiboye. But we understand the embattled lecturer has denied assaulting Sobowale.

UNILORIN VC, Ambali, reportedly said Ajiboye’s denial of the alleged assault could be taken for an apology.

“My students were supposed to write an exam CAC 204 (Edit: he may have wrongly pronounced ‘CHE 204’,” Ajiboye was quoted to have said.

“I saw a student arguing with the lecturer and I collected his ID card without even knowing he was the students’ union president.

“It was in the process of removing his ID card from his neck that my hand hit his face. I never slapped him,” he said.

UNILORIN sources said students are furious at Ajiboye’s “lies”.

“This happened in public and cannot be covered up,” a student told us. “This lecturer is a big liar who must be dealt with. We know what will happen to any student who assaults anyone in the school.

“UNILORIN must act,” the student said.

Ajiboye is also yet to apologise as demanded by students.

“You know, his coming out to deny the whole thing could be taken as a form of apology,” Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, reportedly told Sobowale today.

UNILORIN students are reportedly furious with the VC over the reported comments.

“Our promise is that if Dr. Ajiboye is not brought to book, we would take the book to him,” the student union had said in a statement Sobowale signed.
