"The real reason Tinubu went hard on Betta Edu" -- Yakubu

Tinubu wants to prove something to Nigerians, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, the Convener of Arewa Think Tank says on Betta Edu’s prosecution.

In a surprising move, President Bola Tinubu suspended the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, and the National Coordinator of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), Hajiya Halima Shehu after allegations came forth  of financial impropriety against them.

Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, the Convener of Arewa Think Tank, revealed that there were initial doubts about whether the suspended minister, Betta Edu, would face a probe due to her close ties with President Tinubu.

However, Yakubu emphasized that Tinubu has made it clear that no one is above scrutiny, even his close allies.

Yakubu explained that President Tinubu had set job targets and performance guidelines for all ministers, indicating that those who failed to fulfill their responsibilities would face consequences.

The suspension of Edu is seen as a step towards a thorough investigation into the alleged financial impropriety.

According to Yakubu, Edu and NSIPA Coordinator Halima Shehu’s proximity to President Tinubu led many to believe they would be immune to consequences.

However, Tinubu’s decisive action in suspending them demonstrates his commitment to accountability and public interest.

“Their suspension was the rightful administrative practice to enable them to clear their names and not obstruct investigations,” stated Yakubu, emphasizing that Tinubu prioritizes public interest over political relationships and personal debts.

The Arewa chieftain acknowledged that both women held significant roles in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and played prominent roles in Tinubu’s campaign.

Despite their closeness to the President, Tinubu’s decision to suspend them sends a strong message that accountability will not be compromised for political associations.
