Why Troost-Ekong chose Nigeria over Netherlands
Al-Kholood FC defender and Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong recently shared insights into his decision to represent Nigeria internationally rather than the Netherlands, where he was born.
Speaking on the *Sports Afterparty Podcast*, Troost-Ekong explained that a pivotal phone call from the late Nigerian coach Stephen Keshi and the promise of international football at just 21 influenced his choice, *PUNCH Sports* reports.
Troost-Ekong, who had represented the Dutch U19 and U20 teams, recalled that the Nigerian national team was undergoing a period of transition, with a need for younger defenders. “I had played for the Dutch U19 and U20 squads, but there was no real perspective yet for the first team,” he said.
“The choice was between waiting for a possible future opportunity with the Netherlands or joining the Super Eagles immediately, as they were looking to bring in younger players.”
The 30-year-old defender has since become a staple in the Nigerian lineup, consistently delivering strong performances over a decade-long international career.
Named as captain on an interim basis during AFCON 2021, Troost-Ekong holds the record for the most goals scored by a defender at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to IFFHS. He has earned five goals, with three scored in a single tournament, and his standout performances recently earned him a CAF Men’s Player of the Year nomination.
Ahead of Nigeria’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Benin Republic, Troost-Ekong spoke to NFF TV, dismissing any talk of complacency. Despite Nigeria needing only a point to qualify, he emphasized the team’s commitment to a win.
“The match won’t be easy; the Beninoise are also aiming for qualification. However, our objective is clear: three points on the night,” he said.
The game will be played at Stade Houphouet Boigny, a venue that brings mixed memories for the Super Eagles. Nigeria previously suffered a 2-1 defeat to Benin there in the 2026 World Cup qualifier but also achieved memorable successes in the AFCON 2023 campaign.
Troost-Ekong’s journey exemplifies the Nigeria Football Federation’s successful efforts over the last 15 years to recruit dual-nationality players, bringing in talents from the diaspora to strengthen the Super Eagles’ squad.
