Actress Bolaji Ogunmola has defended the use of sexual scenes in movies, stating that they are necessary to better tell certain stories.

In an interview with Saturday Beats, the actress argued that when a film is good, the sexual scenes would not be the first thing that people would remember. Instead, it would be about how the film made them feel.

“I think it is needed sometimes to drive home certain aspects of the character portrayed. One cannot be telling stories about prostitutes or strippers, and they would be fully clothed. If the stories require it, then let them show it,” she said.

The actress, who has been receiving rave reviews for her role in the movie ‘Before Valentines’, added that she believes that sexual scenes in films are a way to help viewers better understand certain characters.

“The reception the movie has enjoyed has been extremely humbling and very exciting. For one’s work to resonate with people is something to be thankful for. My experience playing ‘Chika’ was wonderful. I literally just had to ‘channel’ a friend I knew in university who was exactly like the character. I remember reading the script and I said I wanted to play it like that. I think everyone knows or has experienced a Chika before; maybe without the drama but we all know a Christian sister who is literally married to Jesus,” she said.

Ogunmola’s comments come as some Nigerians have expressed concern over the prevalence of sexual scenes in Nollywood movies. Some critics argue that the overuse of such scenes is damaging to the country’s cultural values and sends the wrong message to young people.

However, Ogunmola’s comments suggest that the use of sexual scenes in movies should not be seen as a moral failing, but rather as a tool that can be used to help better tell certain stories. The actress’s remarks reflect a growing acceptance of more adult-themed content in Nollywood, as the industry continues to evolve and adapt to changing societal norms.

Ogunmola’s role in ‘Before Valentines’ has been particularly well-received by audiences, with many praising her portrayal of the character ‘Chika’. The film tells the story of a young couple who must navigate the complexities of their relationship and find a way to make their love last.

Overall, Ogunmola’s comments on the use of sexual scenes in movies reflect a growing acceptance of more adult-themed content in Nollywood. While some may still criticize the use of such scenes, it is clear that there is a growing understanding of their place in helping to better tell certain stories.
