Why Mykhailo Mudryk is a Chelsea flop -- Peter Schmeichel

Former Manchester United goalkeeper and club legend, Peter Schmeichel, has laid the blame for Mykhailo Mudryk having an underwhelming season with Chelsea.

Schmeichel bases Mudryk’s poor performances at Chelsea on the dressing room atmosphere at the club.

The Ukrainian forward joined Chelsea in the January transfer window in a deal worth up to £89 million, after impressing with ten goals and eight assists in 18 matches for Shakhtar Donetsk during the first half of the ongoing 2022-2023 season. Mykhailo Mudryk had been close to signing for Arsenal before joining their London rivals.

Since joining Chelsea, the 22-year-old has struggled to settle in and has only managed one assist in ten appearances, failing to score a goal for the Blues so far this season. Speaking on Premier League Productions, Schmeichel stated that the Chelsea dressing room was to blame for Mudryk’s struggles at the club.

According to Schmeichel, the atmosphere in the Chelsea dressing room was not conducive to success, and too many players had been brought in on promises. He added that there were too many players in the squad, creating a lack of cohesion and camaraderie, which could be impacting Mudryk’s ability to settle in and perform on the pitch.

Schmeichel went on to acknowledge that Mudryk was an outstanding player at Shakhtar Donetsk, but said that playing for the Ukrainian club was different from playing for Chelsea, as Shakhtar played in a different style and way. Schmeichel also highlighted the external, non-football issues surrounding Mudryk’s personality that could be affecting his performance on the pitch.

The former goalkeeper’s comments highlight the importance of a positive dressing room environment for players’ success and their ability to settle in at a new club. Chelsea will need to address any issues in their dressing room if they hope to improve their performances on the pitch and get the best out of their players, including Mudryk.
