MTN Company has sacked no fewer than 4,000 workers from its Nigeria offices without due notice or plan for remuneration. This could be as a result of the N330 billion regulator fine imposed on the company last year for defaulting NCC regulatory directives.

It would be recalled that the telecom company last year was fined the sum of N330 billion or $1.67 billion to be paid within the space of just three years, for defaulting federal government’s regulatory directives.

The effect resulted in a loss in the interim result released by the company. The interim result of the company contracted by about 13 per cent compared to the corresponding period of 2015. Hence, MTN is said to have an outstanding amount of N280 billion or $ 1.42 billion to remit to the federal government of Nigeria.

Sources close to MTN blamed the mass sack on high cost of operation particularly with the rapid fall in Naira value and rise in fuel price among others.

Affected staff workers disclosed that the company did not give a due notice to them for their action as they were suddenly locked out of the company premises with retinue of security agencies.

According to him, “in 2012 they outsourced us to a company called DNSSL. Now what we have heard is that MTN is taking us away from DNSSL to an Indian company, ICON.” He said they were informed by MTN about two weeks ago that the contract would terminate at the end of September. With no further information, the staff thought they would return to MTN.

“But on reaching here today, they placed security all over the place, numbering up to 50 private security operatives,” he said.

“They refused even to let us inside the compound. They only asked that a security operative address us. The management of MTN claimed to have outsourced us, but a careful study of the process shows that MTN is still the owners of the company, according to Premium Times.

However a source from the company told Topnaija that MTN did not sack any staff worker, adding that the people were just contract staff employed not by MTN. According to him, “MTN did not sack anybody. Those people were just contract staff by another company working in MTN. I believe our media officer will issue a press release on that soon,” he added.

As at the time of writing this report, efforts to reach MTN spokesperson, Funso Aina, on the incident proved abortive.
