Why JAMB scrapped use of email for UTME, DE registration

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has declared that the utilisation of email will no longer be needed to for registration processes for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE).

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, on Tuesday, told reporters that email would only be required for the successful completion of registration by candidates to obtain information on the examination.

As indicated by Oloyede, the new system is to guarantee that the information of candidates are not visible to shady cyber cafe operators and other illegal components who in the course of UTME/DE registration steal email passwords to commit fraud.

He said, “As from Thursday, April 15, 2021, candidates will no longer be required to provide any email address during registration.

“Consequently, candidates will have the following options to access their profile during or after registration; mobile app on the candidates’ phone.”

One of the alternatives, in accordance with Oloyede, is the printing of examination slip or result notification slip or ticketing.

The registrar further said that such could be done anywhere, utilising the candidates JAMB registration number only.

He said, “At the conclusion of the 2021 UTME/DE registration, candidates will provide their email addresses only after the 2021 UTME/DE registration has been declared closed by JAMB through (a) Mobile APP on his/her registered phone, (b) sending the word email (space then the email address) on his /her registered phone to 55019.

“The email is typed twice for correctness (Email addresses will be entered twice for validation and prevention of typographical errors.”
