Why I rejected Arsenal transfer -- Real Sociedad midfielder

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has revealed the reason he turned down a transfer to Arsenal during the January transfer window, stating that it would have been ‘illogical’ to leave his current club in the middle of the season.

Arsenal was in desperate need of reinforcements in central midfield during the January transfer window, hoping to provide competition and backup for their key midfielders, Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka. As a result, the Premier League leaders explored a deal for Zubimendi, whose contract at Real Sociedad includes a £52.8m release clause.

However, the 24-year-old had little intention of leaving the Spanish La Liga club, despite the interest from Arsenal. Zubimendi told Sport that he had informed his manager not to entertain any offers during the winter transfer window, and that he was very happy at Real Sociedad.

“Leaving Real Sociedad aside with the season we are having would be illogical. Here I am very happy,” Zubimendi said, adding that he looked forward to a quiet summer and that he would not mind if Arsenal made contact again at the end of the season.

Arsenal eventually secured a deadline-day signing of Jorginho from Chelsea, but it was clear that Zubimendi was one of the players they were interested in signing during the winter transfer window.

Zubimendi has been an important player for Real Sociedad this season, making 25 appearances in all competitions and helping his team to fifth place in the La Liga table. With his performances attracting interest from top clubs, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal will renew their interest in the midfielder at the end of the season.
