Daniel Akpeyi, Kaizer Chiefs and Super Eagles goalkeeper, has said that he can’t wait to be back to the pitch after the Premier Soccer League was suspended due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Matches of the South African top-flight were postponed on March 18 due to the outbreak of the virus, with dates for resumption still unknown, as countries continue to battle the spread.

Amakhosi are currently top of the league table, four points ahead of second-place Mamelodi Sundowns and Akpeyi has been a key figure in the team’s success, keeping nine clean sheets in 19 appearances.

The keeper stated in an audio clip made available to Sports Extra.

“I sure hope you all are safe with your family during this time of the lockdown and following all the guidelines that will help us combat the coronavirus pandemic. As players, we are keeping ourselves fit by following a strict programme and holding sessions via video with our trainers,” Akpeyi said.

“Training hard will help us ensure we are fit for when the league resumes. We are also in touch as players through technological means to maintain the team spirit. We cannot wait to get back and get our fans behind us. If we all comply, we will defeat this enemy facing us, so life can get back to normal.”
