"Why I am closer to leaving than staying" -- Guardiola

No premier league fan would fault Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for wanting to leave the Etihad after the upcoming season. In fact, rival fans treasure the day he eventually leaves.

The Spaniard as his stats have shown, has won it all and seen it all; the premier league titles, the Champions League, the finals and of course, his tactical discipline that a lot of teams have copied throughout his stay in England. The former Barcelona boss even gave fans the peak of club rivalries as he faced off a recurring nemesis in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

However, in a revealing update from Manchester City’s preseason tour in the USA, Pep Guardiola sparked some speculation about his future, hinting that his tenure at the Etihad Stadium might be nearing its end. With his current contract set to expire in 2025, the 53-year-old manager emphasized that any decision to extend his stay will hinge on what’s best for both him and the club.

“I know maybe I was not correct to say in the right moment, when we won the Premier League, but I’m saying that I’ve been eight years in Man City so I’m not being here for eight more years,” Guardiola remarked, hinting at a potential departure. “That’s why I’m closer to leaving than staying. But I didn’t say I’m leaving.”

Guardiola added, “When I’m leaving, I will say I’m leaving. But I didn’t say it. I will not rule it out absolutely to extend the contract. I just want to be sure it’s the right decision, not just for me, for the club.”

Though the tactical genius played coy with any certainty on what is to come, Pep Guardiola’s stay in the English Premier League seems to be numbered.
