Why Arsenal do not need 114 points to dethrone Manchester City

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has set an audacious target for his team, suggesting they would need a staggering 114 points to outpace Manchester City for the Premier League title.

While the Gunners have finished as runners-up behind City in the last two seasons, cutting the gap to just two points in 2023/2024, Arteta believes near-perfection is necessary to topple Pep Guardiola’s squad.

When asked about the challenge, Arteta quipped, “114 points. If we do that, we win the league for sure. This is the objective, from there we’ll see what we get. Earn the right to win it and have the biggest probability over the opponent. When we have difficulties, we are still better than the opponents. That’s really the objective.”

However, despite Arteta’s sky-high ambitions, the reality may not be as daunting as it seems. Here’s why:

  1. City’s Potential Slips: Even the most dominant teams can have off seasons. Injuries, loss of form, or even managerial changes can impact performance. City could experience such hurdles, narrowing the points gap naturally.
  2. Strengthened Squad: Arsenal’s summer signings and tactical improvements can significantly boost their performance. The addition of key players in crucial positions can turn draws into wins and tighten up their defense.
  3. Rising Competition: The Premier League is fiercely competitive. Other top teams taking points off City can also play a pivotal role in reducing the points Arsenal needs to clinch the title.
  4. Consistency Over Perfection: While aiming for 114 points sets a high standard, consistent performances and securing victories in crucial matches could suffice. The emphasis should be on winning key fixtures and maintaining form throughout the season.
