"Why Arsenal are dangerous this season" — Micah Richards

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has shed light on what makes Arsenal a formidable force this season. With their unbeaten run still intact, the Gunners’ tactical press has been a game-changer, helping them secure vital victories like their recent 3-1 comeback against Southampton.

“What’s so great about Arsenal is the way they press, and the way they can adapt to what opponents they are playing,” Richards noted.

Richards, speaking on BBC Match of the Day, praised Mikel Arteta’s adaptive approach, highlighting how Arsenal’s high press, led by Jorginho and Declan Rice, sets traps for opponents and shifts into a 4-4-2 formation when needed.

This tactical adjustment was on full display during their recent 3-1 victory over Southampton at the Emirates. After falling behind to a 55th-minute strike from Cameron Archer, Arsenal quickly responded with goals from Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Bukayo Saka to secure all three points.

The relentless pressure from Jorginho and Declan Rice in midfield, both of whom were aggressive in cutting off passing lanes and pressing high up the pitch, played a pivotal role in turning the tide for the North London side.

Richards was particularly impressed with how Arteta’s men set traps for the opposition, forcing them into mistakes that Arsenal swiftly capitalized on.

“They set traps here, they sort of play 4-4-2 at times when they press, and Jorginho and (Declan) Rice were really aggressive in going high,” Richards explained.

The tactical fluidity and intensity of their press have made Arsenal difficult to break down, but more importantly, it has allowed them to win the ball back in dangerous areas, giving their attacking players ample opportunities to punish teams.

Arsenal’s relentless pressure, paired with their ability to read the game, has left many Premier League rivals struggling to keep pace. As they head into the international break just a point behind leaders Liverpool, the Gunners are proving to be a serious title threat this season.
